![]() Nobody knew and there was no evidence in the original trilogy that confirmed one identity over another.Īnd even then, that still doesn't hold entirely true. But other members of Bungie leadership such as Joe Staten and Rob McLees embraced the EU. Members of Bungie could certainly be territorial about control of Halo's story. Or at the very least, it's an overly simplistic interpretation of what actually happened. The idea that Bungie loathed the EU simply doesn't hold much water. They included quotes from the Fall of Reach in Halo 3. ![]() They even brought back Eric Nylund to write Halsey's Journal for Halo Reach to help reconcile Reach and the original novel. Spartan-IIIs and ODSTs debuted in the EU before being lead characters in Bungie games, so did engineers and the prophets. They even included the EU in the games themselves. Bungie directly had a hand in developing the story of Ghosts of Onyx. Joe Staten wrote an entire novel, Rob McLees wrote a short story. They viewed the games as superceding the books but they absolutely payed attention it. This is a misrepresentation of Bungie's relationship with the EU. Even the VA spoke about how he never wanted to go to conventions during the Bungie era because he didn’t want people to attach a face to Chief. No matter who played, you felt you could be Chief. ![]() Nobody knew and there was no evidence in the original trilogy that confirmed one identity over another. I see it as being both a vessel for the player as well as an inclusive decision for any boy who played through Halo when they were young. In this regard, I think Bungie’s reluctance to show Chief’s face is not about Chief being a man of mystery, it’s about the ambiguity of his identity. It also meant the integrity of their vision remained intact. They wanted control and freedom with where they could go with their games. Bungie never paid mind to the EU and were even infamous for scoffing at the books lore. I disagree with you here and I have to agree with Bungie’s take on the Halo universe.
